The Great Ocean Walk & The Great Go-The-Distance Trail Mix

Updated: Sep 16, 2023

During the easter break, we hiked along the great ocean walk. It is a spectacular part of Victorian coastline. We walked along undulating coastal hills, scrambled over rockpools, squeaked along beaches, squelched through muddy, tall eucalypt forest, and carried on through coastal shrubs. There was so much diversity in the plants, animals and scenery.

We met koalas, butterflies, frogs, sheep, danger noodles (snakes), a very cute Broad-toothed rat (Mastacomys fuscus) and so many birds. Unfortunately, we also came across some leaches...ewww. But don't let the leaches put you off!

Friends, books, and websites inspired and informed us before we set off. I highly recommend Haley's Set To Hike website, her Youtube videos and her Insta account for helpful information. https://www.settohike.com/

I was also reading Raynor Winn's latest book, Landlines, at the time of our walk (on my Kindle). All three of her books are so inspiring. If you haven't read any of her work yet I highly recommend you do. I have connected with Ray via her Insta account, and her enthusiasm and personal well wishes were particularly helpful during the more challenging sections of the hike.

Before we set off, I made myself up some trail mix. It was super yummy, and it helped me keep my energy up along the way. For those of you now inspired to go for a long walk and/or hike, here is my recipe, just in case you want to make yourself some Great Go-The-Distance Trail Mix for your own adventure 😘.

GREAT GO-THE-DISTANCE TRAIL MIX RECIPE:

  • 10 handfuls of dry roasted almonds

  • 3 handfuls of dry roasted hazelnuts

  • 70 g bar of Living Koko Koko Duo, broken up into little pieces*

  • 1 handful of small gluten free licorice pieces

  • 1 handful of dehydrated strawberries

  • 1 handful of dehydrated figs

  • 1 handful of sunflower and pepita/pumpkin seed mix

Place all the ingredients into a clean ziplock bag, mix them around a bit, and off you go!

* I also used some of the chocolate pieces to make delicious hot chocolate, slurped up around the campfire with marshmallows.

I share this in the hope that it may help and inspire others. I wish you all the best with your practice.

xx Freya
